SICILY. Messana. 420-413 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 17.17 g, 7 h). MΕΣ-ΣΑΝΑ The nymph Messana, wearing long chiton and holding reins in both hands and kentron in her left, driving biga of mules to right; in exergue, two dolphins confronted. Rev. MEΣ-Σ-A-N-ΙΟ-Ν Hare springing to right; below, dolphin right. Caltabiano Series XIV, 529 (D209/R224). Davis 38 (same dies). Dewing 650 (same dies). HGC 2, 792. SNG ANS 364 (same obverse die). SNG Ashmolean 1843 (same dies). A very well centered and beautifully toned example. Very minor deposits and with a few light marks, otherwise, very fine.
